Organisms and Populations

Given below are two statements:

Statement I: The fig fruit is a non-vegetarian fruit as it has enclosed fig wasps in it.

Statement II: The fig wasp and fig tree exhibit a mutual relationship, as the fig wasp completes its life cycle in the fig fruit and the fig fruit gets pollinated by the fig wasp.

In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:

  1. A.Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
  2. B.Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
  3. C.Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
  4. D.Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct

Solution

The official key marks both statements incorrect: the fig is a syconium (an inflorescence, not a true fruit) and the wasp inside it does not make it 'non-vegetarian'; and while fig and wasp are indeed mutualists, the statement as framed — the wasp completing its life cycle in a 'fruit' — was not accepted.
