The most common planning mistake in NEET preparation isn't a bad study method — it's dividing time evenly across three subjects when the marks aren't divided evenly at all.
Start from the marks split, not the subject count
Physics, Chemistry and Biology sound like three equal thirds. They aren't: Biology (Botany + Zoology combined) is 360 of 720 marks — exactly half the paper — while Physics and Chemistry are 180 each, a quarter apiece. A plan that gives each subject one-third of the study calendar is under-preparing the subject that decides half the score.
That doesn't mean abandoning Physics and Chemistry — a candidate weak in either can lose more marks there than Biology alone can recover — but the time split should start from 50/25/25 and adjust from your own strengths, not from "three subjects, three equal shares."
Biology: breadth over depth, and NCERT line-by-line
Biology's 90 questions are drawn from a syllabus that rewards direct NCERT recall and application more than the multi-step reasoning Physics and Chemistry problems require. The highest-return activity here is close, repeated reading of the NCERT text itself — including the lines students skim past, like table footnotes and diagram labels — because NEET has a track record of testing exactly that level of specific recall.
Genetics (Principles of Inheritance and Variation, Molecular Basis of Inheritance) and human physiology (Human Reproduction, Neural and Chemical Coordination, Body Fluids and Circulation) are consistently dense with questions across past papers — see the weightage table for the current count per chapter, since this shifts slightly as more papers are added rather than being a fixed ranking.
Physics: fewer topics, but each one needs problem practice
Physics rewards depth over the number of chapters attempted. A chapter half-understood produces wrong answers under exam pressure regardless of how many hours were spent on it; a smaller set of chapters solved to genuine fluency outperforms broad, shallow coverage. Mechanics (Laws of Motion through Rotational Motion) and Electricity & Magnetism (Current Electricity through Electromagnetic Induction) are the two largest blocks by both chapter count and historical question volume — build fluency there before spreading thin across the rest.
Chemistry: three different subjects wearing one name
Chemistry splits into Physical, Inorganic and Organic, and they reward different study methods:
- Physical Chemistry (Thermodynamics, Equilibrium, Electrochemistry) is calculation-based — closer to Physics in method than to the rest of Chemistry.
- Inorganic Chemistry (Periodicity, Chemical Bonding, the Block Elements) is memorisation-heavy but highly pattern-based — trends across the periodic table, once understood, replace memorising individual facts.
- Organic Chemistry (Hydrocarbons through Biomolecules) rewards mechanism-level understanding over memorising named reactions — the same handful of electron-pushing patterns recur across most of the syllabus.
Treating all three as "just study Chemistry" wastes the fact that they need genuinely different techniques.
The habit that actually predicts a score: previous-year questions, timed
Reading and understanding a chapter is necessary but doesn't by itself train the two things NEET actually tests under exam conditions: recognising a question's chapter and pattern fast, and finishing 180 questions inside 180 minutes with the +4/−1 scheme working against careless guesses. Solved previous-year papers, attempted as timed mock tests rather than read as a reference, are what actually builds that — not additional reading.

Start with the syllabus map to see where you stand chapter by chapter, use the weightage table to weight your remaining time by what's actually been asked, and move to full mock tests well before the exam date — not in the final week, when the first timed 180-question attempt of your preparation is also the real one.
