Solution

Reducing an ester only as far as the aldehyde needs DIBAL-H, $AlH (iBu)_{2}$ , at low temperature followed by water. $LiAl H_{4}$ would go on to benzyl alcohol, $NaB H_{4}$ does not reduce esters, and $H_{2} /Pd - BaS O_{4}$ is for acid chlorides (Rosenmund).
